[ ♪ music ♪ ] >> cenk: so everybody is talking about the so-called fiscal cliff. oh, my god we're going to fall off the cliff, everybody hurry up. make sure the budget is balanced. i thought you all wanted a balanced budget. when we raise taxes if we do nothing, then in 2013 and then we cut spending what would happen? we would have a balanced budget. no, don't do that, don't do that. president obama is giving a press conference about this so-called fiscal cliff and the grand bargain, etc. as he's doing that and giving a you will these different statements there is good news. he told folks in a meeting of progressives yesterday. i am not going to bubble. i said in 2010 that i'm going to do this once, and i meant it. that's in regards to the bush tax
the roof off that room today. did you see this? >> senator john mccain and senator lindsey graham both said today that they want to have watergate-style laerhearings on attack at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. and that if you nominate susan rice for secretary of state, they will do everything in their power to block her nomination. as senator graham said, he simply doesn't trust ambassador rice after what she said about benghazi. i would like your reaction to that and would those threats deter from making a nomination like that? >> first of all, i'm not going to comment at this point on various nominations that i'll put forward to fill out my cabinet for the succeecond term. those are things that are still being discussed. but let me say specifically about susan rice. she has done exemplary work. she has represented the united states and our interests in the united nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. as i've said before, she made an appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to

formidable opponent, senator john mccain, he's becoming prepare ared for what could be a high-profile nomination fight. mccain and lindsey graham said he will not support the nomination of ambassador rice if she's nominate. >> we will do what we can do block the nomination. >> i don't trust her. i thought she should know better. if she didn't snow better, she shouldn't be the voice of america. >> their chief complaint is they disqualified herself several days after the benghazi on a slew of shows, including "meet the press." >> our current assessment is what happened in benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction of what had transpired hours before in cairo. almost a copycat of the demonstrations at our facility in cairo. >> at his news conference, a visibly angry obama fired back. >> if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador who had nothing to do with benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received, and to besmirch her rep

frontrunner to be the next secretary of state. republican senators john mccain and lindsey graham have called rice unthus worthy and unqualified for a promotion for her comments that an anti-muslim video triggered the benghazi attack that skilled four americans. president obama insisted the ambassador was simply making a presentation based on the available intelligence and had tough words for the senators. when they go after the u.n. ambassador apparently because they think she's an easy target, then they've got a problem with me. and should i choose, if i think that she would be the best person to serve america in the capacity at the state department department, then i will nominate here. >> eliot: much more on that a little later in the program. the president also reached out to the g.o.p. on immigration reform and offered an idea that he would like to see from congress. >> obama: whatever process we have needs to make sure that border security's strong, needs to deal with employers effectively, needs to provide a pathway for the undocumented here needs to deal with the dream act kids and
